Benefit Dinner, Silent Auction Planned for Megan Clark

Megan Clark

A benefit dinner and silent auction for Megan Clark, 17, of Sallisaw will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sequoyah County Fairgrounds in Sallisaw.

The cost of the bean-chili dinner will be $7 per person. The silent auction so far includes various baskets donated by local flower shops and others coffees, bath accessories, and miscellaneous items. Also up for grabs will be a bag of dog food, a drill, and other items.

Clark, a junior at Sallisaw High School, is suffering from Desmoid tumors, and is undergoing chemotherapy at the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, said her mother, Kim Clark.

According to information on the Mayo Clinic web site, Desmoid tumors are noncancerous growths that occur in the connective tissue. Desmoid tumors most often occur in the abdomen, arms and legs.

They are considered rare, reported in only two to four patients per million, per year.

Another term for Desmoid tumors is aggressive fibromatosis.

Treatment may involve surgery to remove the tumor, when possible. Sometimes the tumor can't be removed without damaging nearby structures. In these cases, other treatments may be recommended such as radiation or chemotherapy.
