Sunday Fire Damages Mobile Home

A fire of undetermined origin badly damaged a double-wide mobile home Sunday.

Brent Fire Chief Lance Calhoun said the dispatch was received at about 3:15 p.m. Sunday. The home is on 1125 Road in the Brent area south of Sallisaw.

Calhoun said no one was home at the time, and there were no injuries. When firefighters arrived they found the fire was in the master bedroom of the home, and they were able to contain the fire to the bedroom. Calhoun said they had the fire under control in about 45 minutes with the mutual aid of the Sallisaw and Gans Fire Departments. But smoke and heat damaged the rest of the home and Calhoun estimated the loss at 80 percent of the home.

Calhoun said that because of the unusual nature of the blaze the fire marshal was called in.

“He said he couldn’t find anything suspicious, like an accelerant,” Calhoun reported.

Calhoun said he and other firefighters were on scene until about 6:30 p.m. Sunday while they secured the scene and visited with the fire marshal.

Calhoun said the home is owned by a brother and sister, Amber and John Toney. John Toney was living at the home, but was not at home at the time the fire was reported. The home belonged to the Toney’s mother, who died in August. It is not known if the home was insured or not.
