Single Parent Scholarship Fund Plans Fundraiser

The Arkansas Single Parent Scholarship Fund (ASPSF) will hold its annual Holiday Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 2.

The dinner, provided by River City Bistro and entertainment from the Community School of the Arts will end at 7 p.m. to allow those attending the Christmas performance of the Fort Smith Symphony or going on to the movie theater plenty of time to get in their seats. Recipients of the ASPSF will share stories about how the scholarships have impacted their lives and the lives of their children.

The mission of the ASPSF is to enable low income single parents achieve self-sufficiency by completing their post-secondary education and securing professional employment. Our goal is to end the cycle of generational poverty one family at a time. Arkansas ranks 49th in the country for the percentage of population with an associate’s degree, 50th for those with at least a bachelor’s degree, and fourth in the nation for the percentage of the population living in poverty (19.3% overall and as high as 35.2% in the Arkansas Delta).

All proceeds of the event will be used for River Valley single parent scholarships in 2018. Every $1,000 received provides a scholarship and support activities for a full-time single parent student for one semester and $3,000 provides for a student for an entire year. Scholarships are pro-rated for part-time students depending on the number of hours they’re taking each semester.

The annual fundraiser has tables seating 10 for $650 and individual seats for $75. For more information, contact Abbie Taylor Cox at the Fort Smith office located at 5401 Rogers Avenue at 479-434-6171 or acox@ASPSF.org.
