Relay for Life Cancelled; Donations Still Taken

Sequoyah County’s annual Relay for Life, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, has been cancelled.

Ashton Yancey, American Cancer Society Community Development Manager in Fort Smith, said, “There were only four volunteers, and they had no planning committee. They couldn’t do it by themselves.”

The county Relay for Life was to be held Oct. 21 in Muldrow. The county Relay for Life website will also become inactive in January.

But supporters can still donate to the cause, Yancey said, by visiting the American Cancer Society on the internet or the Sequoyah County Relay for Life website before it becomes inactive.

Yancey said anyone who would like to volunteer to head up and organize the Relay for Life for next year may call 1-800-227-2345.

“To start an event call that number,” Yancey said. “The volunteers will be assigned a staff member who will help and provide resources for the event.”

The Relay for Life staff will also help the volunteers build their local website and train the volunteers how to update the website.

“It’s really very simple,” Yancey said.

She added that donations may also be sought through a Raise Your Way activity. Information on Raise Your Way is also available on the internet, and is for individuals who want to create their own events. The website promises, “It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.”

The website encourages, “Start a fundraiser. Impact cancer.”
