Competency Exam Ordered for Homeless Man

A 28-year-old man, who identified himself as God and was arrested on Oct. 13, was charged in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw, on Oct. 17 with knowingly concealing stolen property and endangering others while eluding police.

The man, later identified as Lloyd Gordon, was later found by investigators to be driving a white 2009 Chevrolet 2500 truck reported stolen from near a homeless shelter in South Carolina. Gordon told police he was homeless.

After a foot chase and vehicle pursuit Gordon was arrested in Sallisaw hiding in a trash dumpster behind Game Stop in Sallisaw.

The arresting sheriff’s deputy reported that on Oct. 13 he was dispatched to the Interstate 40 westbound rest area to investigate a panhandler who was in a white truck. He found Gordon wearing an orange traffic vest who was asking to use visitors’ cell phones.

The suspect identified himself as another man from New York, and told the deputy he did not know who was driving the truck. The deputy reported he tried to detain the suspect for the purpose of identification, but the suspect then ran south toward I40. The deputy said he caught the suspect and tried to deploy his Taser, which failed. Other deputies arrived to help with the pursuit and search for Gordon, who could not be found.

A short time later the deputies were informed Gordon had returned to the rest area and was driving west in the white truck. Sallisaw police then joined in the pursuit that reached 115 miles per hour. Sallisaw police reported the truck crashed near the 308 mile marker and the suspect fled on foot.

Deputies found Gordon in the dumpster and he was taken into custody.

After the charges against Gordon were filed in district court, Associate District Judge Kyle Waters ordered Thursday that Gordon undergo a competency exam.

His case is on Judge Waters’ Nov. 1 disposition docket.
