A man, ordered into custody of the Sequoyah County Jail, was on his way to jail in the Sequoyah County Courthouse in Sallisaw when he broke away and fled.

Sallisaw police, sheriff’s deputies and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol descended on the courthouse in pursuit. The escape occurred at about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The running suspect is John Douglas Gordon, 44, of Vian. He was reported to be wearing a long-sleeved black shirt, blue jeans and Army boots. He has dark brown hair and brown eyes.

A witness reported seeing a man wearing a long-sleeved black shirt jump into the back seat of maroon Cian. The witness said two women were in the car, which also had a handicap sticker.

It is believed the car went toward Vian.

Gordon was in court on four separate cases when the presiding judge ordered him incarcerated.

“Apparently he didn’t want to do that,” said an official, “and he ran.”

If anyone has information about the escapee contact the sheriff’s department at 918-775-1213 or  call 911.
