Search Underway for Escaped Sallisaw Inmate

Law enforcement officers are searching for an escaped Sallisaw inmate.

Police Chief Terry Franklin said an inmate work crew was in front of Walmart on Ruth Street shortly after noon on Wednesday when one of the inmates jumped onto the back of a red flatbed truck which then sped away.

The inmate is Austin McCallie, 27, of Oklahoma City. He was being held in the Sallisaw jail on various misdemeanor fines, Franklin said.

The inmate is wearing a green and white striped jump suit.

Franklin asked that anyone who sights the inmate or knows of his whereabouts call 911 or the Sallisaw Police Department at 918-775-4141.

“It appears that whoever was driving that flatbed truck knew who McCallie is,” Franklin said.

Sallisaw Police and the sheriff’s department believe the truck went south on U.S. Highway 59. Reports indicated the truck may then have gone east on State Highway 141.
