Escaped Inmate Captured in Muldrow

A 27-year-old escaped inmate has been captured.

Muldrow police and assisting agencies took Austin McCallie into custody without incident Thursday morning. He now faces charges of escape, knowingly concealing stolen property and larceny.

Muldrow police reported McCallie’s 2003 Chevrolet extended cab flatbed pickup was found in a ditch on Interstate 40 at Wilson Rock Road between 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. Thursday. McCallie was not in the vehicle, but Muldrow Officer Ronnie Howard spotted tracks leading away from the vehicle to the north and east.

Muldrow and Sallisaw police, the Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Department and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) responded and set up a perimeter around the truck.

A green and white striped jumpsuit in the truck lead police to believe the truck was McCallie’s.

A short while later a private citizen reported to police that McCallie was seen leaving a wooded area near the Garrison Creek Rodeo Grounds on U.S. Highway 64 east of Muldrow.

Howard, Muldrow Sgt. Robert Allen and OHP Trooper Sheldon Dobbs stopped McCallie at gunpoint and he was taken into custody without incident, police reported.

McCallie was transported back to the Sallisaw Police Department by the OHP.

He escaped Wednesday from an inmate work crew on Ruth Street in Sallisaw. McCallie was jailed on a petit larceny charge on April 30 in Walmart. It was unknown at the time that he had left the truck in the Walmart parking lot.

At the time of his capture, McCallie was wearing jeans, a T-shirt and a green jacket. It is not known where he got the clothes.
