FSA Offers Drought Assistance

State Rep. John Bennett, R-Sallisaw, reminds farm operators in Sequoyah County that they may be eligible to be considered for certain assistance from the Farm Service Agency (FSA).

The help comes as a result of Sequoyah County being designated as a contiguous disaster county by the U.S. Department of Agriculture due to drought declared in October 2016.

“I’ve gotten several calls from farmers in my district asking about assistance due to the drought conditions,” said Bennett. “I wanted to make sure they are aware that emergency loans are available for those who are eligible.”

The assistance includes FSA emergency loans. Farmers have until June 19 to apply for the loans. FSA considers each emergency loan application on its own merits, taking into account the extent of production losses on the farm, and the security and repayment ability of the operator.

Local FSA offices can provide further information. The closest office for Sequoyah County is the Cherokee County Farm Service Agency, 918 W Choctaw St., Tahlequah, OK 74464, (918) 456-1924, Ext. 2.
