Glenn Honored Upon Retirement

George Glenn, Shelter insurance agent and former Sallisaw mayor, was honored at a drop-in reception Wednesday at his office by hundreds who wished him a happy retirement. Glenn’s official retirement date was Dec. 31.

Glenn said he plans on lots of fishing and golf, “As soon as the weather warms up.”

In addition to his 45 years as a Shelter Insurance agent, Glenn also served as Sallisaw mayor for 25 years, from 1977 to 2002. For his work on behalf of the community, a street in Sallisaw’s industrial park was named the George Glenn Boulevard in 2005.

Last year, when celebrating his 45 years in the insurance business, Glenn recalled how he began as an insurance agent. He recalled he came to Sallisaw with the telephone company, but soon found out he had no window in his new office. He consequently sought other employment, and went to work for the Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce.

He said he soon realized that being in business was good, and he went to work selling Shelter Insurance.

Now, 45 years later, his daughter Tracy Baker set up a chalk board that recalled every minute of Glenn’s career in insurance, which is 24,108,480 minutes, to the plus-45 years.

Glenn was also awarded a plaque by Shelter Insurance, and received good wishes from many who attended the reception.

Glenn will also be featured tonight, January 4, on MixTv Channel 19 Sallisaw Spotlight. Join us for that special feature at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m.
