Vian Woman Faces First-degree Murder Charge

A Vian woman was charged last week in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw, with first-degree murder with intent in the death of her husband.

Michelle Scoggins, 45, is accused of stabbing her husband, Billy Mar, 48, on Oct. 11. Mar died the next day in a Fort Smith hospital. Before his death he told police that his wife stabbed him in the abdomen with a filet knife while she was cooking.

Vian Police Chief Ted Johnson said police were called to a home on Benton Line Road shortly before midnight on Oct. 11, where they found Mar conscious and talking. It is believed the stabbing may have been the result of a domestic disturbance, he said.

Scoggins’ next court appearance is set for Dec. 7 when her case will be on Associate District Judge Kyle Waters disposition docket.
