Muldrow Man Faces Four Counts of Assault and Battery

A Muldrow man was charged last week in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw, with four counts of assault and battery on a police officer after he allegedly fought arrest.

Matthew Swaim, 22, was also charged with one count of public intoxication, a misdemeanor.

According to the arresting officer’s report, he was dispatched on Oct. 25 to check on a man behaving strangely. The deputy found Swaim and another man fighting on a county road, and broke up the fight. The other man said he had stopped to help Swaim but Swaim hit him.

The deputy asked Swaim if he had “taken any narcotics lately and he stated he had done some meth.”

The deputy arrested Swaim and on the way to the county jail in Sallisaw, Swaim began beating his head against the window in the deputy’s vehicle. When Swaim refused to quit, the deputy stunned Swaim with a Taser and Swaim said he would stop.

But, the deputy reported, Swaim began kicking and screaming at him and the deputy had to stop and stun Swaim again, but Swaim continued the attack and kicked the deputy in the jaw. When the deputy tried to pull Swaim from the vehicle, Swaim kicked him in the stomach, the deputy reported. The deputy reported he was able to place Swaim in leg restraints and put him back in his vehicle for transport to the jail.

As he was being booked into jail Swaim allegedly attacked a jail supervisor and a jailer.

The charges were filed against Swaim on Oct. 27.
