Officials Proclaim Domestic Violence Awareness Month


Sallisaw officials and others proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the city at a proclamation signing Monday at the Sallisaw library. Sallisaw Police Officer John Owens, left in front, is chairman of the unit. Sallisaw Mayor Julie Ferguson, second from left in front, attended and signed the proclamation. Owens said the unit assists victims in escaping from violent situations by providing a safe place to stay or safe escape from the situation. The Sequoyah County Commissioners also proclaimed the month for the county earlier in the day. 

Also attending at the library, in no particular order, are Sallisaw Police Chief Terry Franklin, Sheriff Ron Lockhart, Shawna Morris, Amy Faye Edwards, Donna Owens, Sharon Day, Crystal Gaynor, Cindy Smith, Brandi Timmerman, Herb Hutchinson, Blaine Griffey, Nan Stites, Jenn Griffey, Amy Edwards, Matt Ellis, Ashlee Wing, Shandra Hudson, and Helen Stemmer.
