I40 Narrowed near Sallisaw for Bridge Repairs

Westbound I-40 is narrowed to one lane about three miles west of U.S. Highway 59 (near mm 306) near Sallisaw until further notice due to damage to the bridge over Big Sallisaw Creek. During a routine bridge inspection crews discovered cracks in two spans in the westbound bridge, requiring the closure of the right lane of westbound I-40.

ODOT is performing more detailed inspections and developing plans for a repair project, which will be let to contract using expedited bidding procedures.

This bridge was built in 1967 and carries nearly 9,000 vehicles each day. Federal guidelines require all bridges to be inspected at least every two years. The last inspection in 2014 found no safety issues with this bridge.

A future $6.4 million project to replace the east and westbound I-40 bridges over Big Sallisaw Creek is scheduled for Federal Fiscal Year 2019.
