Sallisaw Farmers Market Opens Saturday

The Sallisaw Farmers Market opens for the season Saturday and offers the freshest produce available, organic foods and soaps, and arts and crafts.

Max Smith, chairman of the Sallisaw Farmers Market, said the market will be open from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday. The market is in downtown Sallisaw in the parking lot west of the library.

This early in the growing season Smith said he expects six to seven vendors will be offering onions, radishes, greens, and other produce, along with fresh eggs. Also, Smith said at least one vendor will have organic herbs and produce and even offers organic soaps.

Baked goods, jams and jellies will also be for sale on some vendors’ tables.

Smith said, “Our prices are comparable and our produce is fresh.”

He said that a lot of interest has also been shown in arts and crafts, and some arts and crafts vendors may be at Saturday’s market.

Other items to look forward to either on opening day or as the season advances may be ducks, chickens and rabbits, and one vendor who specializes in making cedar furniture. “He sells quite a lot,” Smith said.

The farmers market is open during the warm months on both Saturdays and Wednesdays, but Smith said he isn’t sure if vendors will be ready for Wednesdays this early in the season.

He said there is an increasing interest in arts and crafts, and the bylaws of the organization require that no foreign-made items or flea market items are sold at the market. Also, the produce must be grown in Oklahoma or in any county adjacent to Sequoyah County, which includes Crawford and Sebastian Counties in Arkansas.

Anyone interested in more information about the Sallisaw Farmers Market may contact Smith at 918-775-0620 during the day or at 918-235-0881 during the evenings. He said membership in the organization is $10 a year. On market day, vendors pay $5 a booth.
