Foster Grandparents Needed for Mentoring Program

The Foster Grandparents program at Liberty and Eastside Elementary Schools in Sallisaw is in need of volunteer grandparents, Roseanne Stanley from KiBois Community Action told Sallisaw City Commissioners at their meeting Monday.

Stanley said the program has 10 volunteers at the two elementary schools and more are needed. She asked the city to promote the program by handing out program information.

She said Foster Grandparents are volunteers, age 55 and older, who are placed in schools and volunteer a minimum of 15 hours per week to provide supportive, person-to-person services to children.

Those who qualify for the program receive a tax-free stipend of $2.65 per hour, paid mileage and other benefits that allow participation at no cost to the volunteer.

Volunteers do not need formal experience in tutoring or mentoring and receive pre-service orientation and training from the organization.

For more information contact Stanley, the program coordinator, at 918-207-8909 or Shaunda Noah, program director, at 918-465-3381.
