Contraband Smuggler Charged in District Court

A 29-year-old Sallisaw man was the first to be charged in 2016 with a felony in Sequoyah County District Court in Sallisaw.

Raymond Gillispie was charged Tuesday with conspiracy to bring contraband into the jail and a misdemeanor count of malicious injury to property under $1,000. He is accused of digging a hole in the Sequoyah County Jail wall, from the inside, so that he could smuggle in snuff. A bench warrant was issued for Gillispie’s arrest on Tuesday.

According to court records and the affidavit filed by the investigating deputy, Gillispie was in jail in August on drug-related charges, when he knocked a hole in the grout in his cell wall. Although he first denied knowledge of how the hole got below his bunk, Gillispie later related to interrogators that he created the hole with a broom handle. Gillispie said he then stuck a sock tied to a string through the hole in the wall and lowered it to the ground so his wife could fill it with snuff. But his wife had second thoughts and did not send the snuff in.

According to the report, Gillispie told investigators, “It was a stupid mistake.”

Gillispie later entered a guilty plea to the drug charges and was sentenced to drug court.
