Sallisaw Man Faces Neglect, Drug Charges

A Sallisaw man, who left two children in a car while allegedly involved in drug activity, was charged Sept. 22 in Sequoyah County District Court with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and child neglect, both felonies, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

Aaron Lee Burton, 25, was arrested by Sallisaw police on Sept. 16 at a motel on Kerr Blvd.

According to the police report, the officer was patrolling when he saw a car parked at the motel with two children inside. The children were ages 6 and 2. The officer reported the vehicle was running and the air conditioning was on. The 6-year-old told the officer they were with an adult who was upstairs at the motel.

The officer went to the room where he found Burton with two others. The officer reported he saw Burton drop something and he found it was a smoking device loaded with a green leafy substance. According to the report, Burton also admitted to the officer he had a hydrocodone pill in his shoe.

The children were released into their mother's custody.

Burton was given a court-appointed attorney Sept. 22 and his case is on Judge Kyle Water's disposition docket Oct. 7.
