Town of Vian Without Local Police Force

The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Department has been notified by officials with the Town of Vian that they currently do not have a police chief and therefore the local police dept. will be closed until the position is filled. State statutes require that any Oklahoma police officer must be supervised by an active police chief within their department. Because of the absence of a chief Vian Police Dept. officers are not legally commissioned to perform their duties.

Vian residence should call 911 if in need of police assistance. The Sequoyah County Sheriff's Dept. will be answering calls and assisting the citizens of Vian until this issue is resolved. Sheriff  Ron Lockhart stated, "We have a deputy in that area and have already responded to calls." Lockhart is concerned with the issue and is taking steps to ensure the safety of Vian residence.

Information regarding the reason for the absence of a police chief has not been released at this time. We will bring you more details as this story develops
