Sallisaw City Manager Receives Cherokee Award

Sallisaw City Manager Clayton Lucas received special recognition and a plaque from Cherokee Nation Career Services for participating in the 2015 Summer Youth Employment Program. The awards luncheon was held July 17 at the tribal complex in Tahlequah. Debby Keith accepted the award for the city. Above, at the presentation are, from the left. The Summer Youth Employment Program gives young people the opportunity to gain employment skills and earn a little pocket money by placing them in jobs in their home communities during the summer school break. The program takes place annually during June and July and is open to youth ages 14-24 that are citizens of federally-recognized Indian tribes. The program is designed to help participants learn basic workplace skills, such as employment etiquette, and provides hands-on work experience that can translate into better chances of employment later on.

Lucas said, "We started this as a pilot program to see if it would be a benefit to the city. It worked out great. Next year we hope to get more aggressive with the program, and have the young people at the pool, in the parks department, in the office and in other departments."

Four young people completed the program working for the City of Sallisaw Lucas said.
