Clinton James Jones, 34, of Sallisaw was indicted recently in U.S. Federal Court in Muskogee for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The charge arose from an investigation by the Sallisaw Police Department, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The charge is punishable by not more than 10 years imprisonment, up to a $250,000 fine or both.

Jones also faces charges in Sequoyah County District Court, Sallisaw, where he is currently charged with possession of a firearm after former conviction of a felony, possession of a sawed-off shotgun , and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges were filed March 18. He was also charged in district court on Feb. 18 with possession of a controlled, dangerous substances and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Chris Wilson represented the United States in the Federal case. The U.S. attorney's office included in the press release, "A grand jury indictment does not constitute evidence of guilt. A grand jury indictment is a method of bringing formal charges against a defendant. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and may not be found guilty unless evidence establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt."
