Sallisaw Residents Warned about Rabies

Sallisaw police are cautioning residents about a cat that has tested positive for rabies. The cat attacked and bit a child in the Four Seasons addition on Sunday. According to authorities, police officers observed the cat acting strange, including the fact that the cat attacked rather than ran away. The cat was captured and sent to the state for testing. On Wednesday the state notified the police department that the cat tested positive for rabies. "We ask that residents take reasonable precautions by being aware of strays and wildlife, vaccinating pets, securing garbage and not leaving pet food outdoors," the police department warns. Anyone who sees a domestic animal or wildlife acting suspiciously is asked to contact Sallisaw animal control or the police department at 918-775-4142. By Sally Maxwell, Senior News Director
