Sports Complex Construction Slowed by Weather

The big machines sit silent at the Sallisaw Sports Complex, due to rainy weather. City Manager Bill Baker said construction on the complex has been halted by the more-than-normal rain this past summer and this fall. Baker told city commissioners at their meeting Monday that the planned completion date for Phase 1 of the complex has been changed from March to May 5. Baker said the city's $305,000 contract with Rossco Construction of Muskogee for the dirt work has a built-in credit for rain days. Drainage materials were recently delivered to the site, on U.S. Highway 64 on the city's east side, but sit unused, as the construction company waits for the mud to dry. Baker said, "The weather has slowed construction down, but 75 percent of the project is dirt work. If you don't do the dirt work correctly, you'll have a lot of future problems. We're about a month behind, but we want to have it ready for the ball seasons. It all depends on the weather." A 12-inch water line to the construction site has already been completed.
