Man Identified, Family Notified

   
A man who jumped from the Garrison Avenue bridge between Oklahoma and Arkansas has been identified and his family notified of his death. The man was Derrick Griffin a black 44-year-old male, of Fort Smith. Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart said his department was working with the Fort Smith police on the case. Witnesses called 911 and reported seeing the man sitting on the bridge railing at about 5:36 p.m. Thursday. When officers from Sebastian County Sheriff's office, the Sequoyah County Sheriff's Office and the Fort Smith Police arrived, the man jumped. The Fort Smith Fire Department retrieved Griffin, who was found floating face down. The rescuers performed CPR but the man was later pronounced dead at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith. The man's body will be sent to the Oklahoma Medical Examiners for an autopsy.
