Two Killed in Muskogee County Crash

A Fort Gibson man and a Haskell woman are dead following a two-vehicle crash at 10:37 p.m. Monday on State Highway 16, about 10 miles west of Muskogee. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported Joseph Phillip Sabella II, 48, of Fort Gibson was driving his 2000 Ford Windstar van east when, for an unknown reason, he went left of center and struck a 1997 Toyota driven by Carol Mattheis Gonzalez, 68, of Haskell. The OHP reported Sabella was thrown about 18 feet from his vehicle, and Gonzalez had to be extricated from her vehicle by the Haskell Fire Department. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene. The OHP reported Sabella had the odor of alcohol on his person. Gonzalez was wearing his seat belt and Sabella was not, the OHP reported. The airbags in both vehicles did deploy.
